Stockton & Darlington Railway: Etherley Inclines, summit and upper sections is a Grade II listed structure comprising part of the pioneering Stockton and Darlington Railway, which opened in 1825. The inclines represent the surviving upper sections and summit of the engineered route designed to overcome the steep gradients of the Durham landscape, incorporating stationary steam engines to haul loaded wagons up the inclined planes. This section of railway demonstrates the innovative engineering solutions developed during the early railway age, when locomotives alone could not manage sustained steep gradients. The Etherley Inclines form part of the archaeological and industrial heritage of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, one of the world's first public railways to employ steam locomotives on a significant scale.
