Overview

History & significance

Binchester Roman fort, known in antiquity as Vinovia, is a Roman auxiliary fort located near Bishop Auckland in County Durham. The fort was established in the late first century AD and remained in military occupation through the third century, serving as an important garrison on the road between the legionary fortresses of York and Corbridge. Substantial archaeological remains survive, including the fort's bathhouse, which is one of the finest examples of Roman military bathing facilities in Britain, along with defensive ditches and structural foundations that reveal the fort's internal layout. The site preserves evidence of sustained Roman military presence in northern England during the first three centuries AD, making it an important witness to the frontier garrison strategy employed during the occupation of Roman Britain.
