Overview

History & significance

Binchester Roman fort is a auxiliary fort in County Durham that formed part of Dere Street, the principal Roman military route through northern Britain. Occupied from the early second century AD until the early fifth century, the fort served as a strategic stronghold during the Roman occupation and underwent significant reconstruction during the third century. The site contains well-preserved remains including sections of the fort's defences, internal structures, and a rare example of an underfloor heating system (hypocaust) within the commanding officer's quarters. Archaeological investigations, most notably in the late twentieth century, have yielded substantial artefactual evidence including pottery, coins, and military equipment that illuminate the life and organisation of the garrison.
