Stockton & Darlington Railway: Belts Gill embankment, lower part of the northern Etherley Incline is a section of railway infrastructure associated with the pioneering Stockton and Darlington Railway, which operated from 1825. The embankment forms part of the Etherley Incline, a significant engineering feature of this early public railway line that connected collieries in County Durham to the ports of Stockton-on-Tees. The surviving earthwork represents the substantial civil engineering works characteristic of early nineteenth-century railway construction, including the substantial banks and cuttings required to maintain the railway's gradient across challenging topography. The site is designated as a scheduled ancient monument in recognition of its historical importance to the development of railway technology and transport in Britain.
