Stockton & Darlington Railway: Belts Gill embankment, lower part of the northern Etherley Incline is a scheduled ancient monument comprising the substantial earthwork of an embankment constructed as part of the Stockton and Darlington Railway in the 1820s. The monument represents a significant element of this pioneering railway line, which opened in 1825 and was among the earliest passenger-carrying railways in Britain. The embankment at Belts Gill demonstrates the civil engineering techniques employed in the early railway age, forming part of the inclined section that required careful construction to manage gradients across the Durham landscape. The surviving earthwork remains an important physical testimony to the technological and industrial developments of the early nineteenth century.
