The Nine Stanes is a Bronze Age stone circle located in Mulloch Wood, Kincardineshire, approximately 650 metres north-west of The Garroll. The monument stands upon bedrock of the Argyll Group, metamorphic rocks formed during the Neoproterozoic period, which comprise psammite, semipelite and pelite. These ancient metamorphic foundations provide a geological setting typical of the Highland region where many such ritual monuments were constructed during the second millennium BC.
Stone circles of this period were likely gathering places for ceremonial, social or funerary purposes. The Nine Stanes takes its name from the standing stones that form its structure, though like many such monuments the original configuration and number of stones may have altered over millennia.
