Westerton hut circle and field system is a post-medieval settlement and arable landscape situated in Kincardineshire, north-north-west of the village itself. The monument comprises evidence of domestic occupation in the form of a hut circle alongside associated field boundaries, reflecting the pastoral and agricultural practices of early modern rural Scotland. Such settlements were characteristic of the period when dispersed farmsteads worked enclosed arable plots and surrounding grazing lands across the Mearns.
The site lies upon bedrock of the Argyll Group, Neoproterozoic sedimentary rock comprising psammite, semipelite and pelite—metamorphic rock types formed under considerable pressure. This geology, typical of the Grampian Highlands and their foothills, would have presented both challenges and opportunities to post-medieval farmers: the soils derived from such parent material required management, whilst the underlying stone provided building material for the hut's construction and the field walls that subdivided the working landscape.
Westerton is protected as a scheduled monument by Historic Environment Scotland under reference SM6083, recognising its significance as evidence of settlement pattern and land use in early modern Kincardineshire. The survival of both domestic structures and associated field boundaries offers insight into the spatial organisation and scale of post-medieval agriculture in northeast Scotland.
