Tithe Barn, Dovecot & Remains of Other Buildings is a medieval grange situated on a geological foundation of Lias Group rocks. These strata of mudstone, siltstone, limestone and sandstone were deposited during the Aalenian age of the Jurassic period, forming the underlying bedrock of this Welsh site. The solid geology provided a stable base for the substantial agricultural complex that developed here during the medieval period.
The grange functioned as a working farm and storage facility, serving the needs of its associated religious or feudal overlord. The tithe barn, the principal surviving structure, would have stored the grain and produce collected as rent or religious dues from local tenants. Such barns are characteristic features of medieval granges, designed with large internal spaces to accommodate substantial quantities of agricultural goods.
The dovecot represents another specialised element of the grange, used for keeping pigeons that provided fresh meat and eggs during the winter months when other protein sources were scarce. The remains of other buildings visible on the site suggest the grange once comprised a more extensive complex of outhouses, workshops and ancillary structures typical of such medieval agricultural establishments. The site is now protected by Cadw, the Welsh monuments authority, under reference GM143.
