Woodhead lead mines and smelter is a post-medieval industrial site in Kirkcudbrightshire, located where wacke bedrock of the Kirkcolm Formation offered accessible lead-bearing mineralisation. The mines exploited veins within this Caradocian sedimentary sequence, which runs through the Southern Uplands and has supported metalworking activity across several centuries. The smelter complex processed ore extracted locally, reducing dependence on long-distance transport of raw material and positioning the works to serve both domestic and regional markets for lead products.
The site represents the integration of mining and primary processing at a single location, a practice that became established where geology and local resources permitted. The wacke bedrock, formed in ancient marine conditions, had weathered and fractured in ways that made lead extraction viable with the technology available to early modern operators. Surviving features document the spatial organisation of industrial activity across the moorland landscape of Galloway.
