Overview

History & context

Milecastle 19 was one of the small fortlets built at roughly Roman-mile intervals along Hadrian's Wall, constructed in the 120s AD under Hadrian and occupied, with interruptions, into the late 4th century. Situated between Portgate and the North Tyne crossing in the central-eastern sector, it would have housed a small garrison of perhaps 20–30 auxiliaries drawn from the nearest fort (likely Halton Chesters), controlling a gated north–south passage through the curtain wall.

Significance

Historical significance

Its primary function was traffic control and observation rather than offensive defence, regulating movement across the frontier and signalling between adjacent turrets (19a and 19b). The name "Matfen Piers" derives from upstanding masonry remnants once visible here — unusual on this stretch, where Wall stone was heavily robbed for field walls and roads.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

The site has seen no major modern excavation; its position is known from the regular spacing of the Wall system and from antiquarian observation of surviving piers of the north gate, recorded in the 18th and 19th centuries before further stone-robbing. No detailed plan, finds assemblage, or confirmed gateway type (long-axis or short-axis) is published for this specific milecastle.
