Overview

History & context

Turret 19B was one of the standard interval watch towers built into the fabric of Hadrian's Wall, positioned between Milecastles 19 (Matfen Piers) and 20 (Halton Shields) in the central sector east of Portgate. Like other turrets on this stretch, it was constructed in the 120s AD under Hadrian and would have been a roughly square stone tower (c. 4.3 × 4.1 m internally) projecting south from the curtain, manned by a small detachment drawn from the auxiliary garrison of the nearest fort, probably Halton Chesters. It was likely occupied into the later 2nd century before being abandoned, as was common with turrets in this part of the line, perhaps under Severus or in the early 3rd century.

Significance

Historical significance

Its function was observational and signalling — providing line-of-sight communication along the Wall and surveillance over the ground to the north — rather than offensive defence, forming part of the integrated system of milecastles, turrets and forts that regulated movement across the frontier. It is not individually distinguished within the Wall's archaeology.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

Very little is recorded for this specific turret; in this sector the Wall and its turrets are largely buried beneath or robbed for the line of the Military Road (B6318), and no significant modern excavation of 19B has been published. Its presence is inferred from the regular turret spacing established by MacLauchlan's and later Wall surve
