Overview

History & context

Milecastle 8 was a small fortlet on Hadrian's Wall, situated in what is now the western suburbs of Newcastle upon Tyne, roughly one Roman mile east of Milecastle 9 (Chapel House) and west of Milecastle 7 (Benwell Hill). Built in the early 120s AD as part of Hadrian's initial Wall scheme, it would have housed a small garrison of perhaps 20–30 auxiliary soldiers controlling a gated crossing through the curtain wall, and it remained in use, with periods of refurbishment, into the later 4th century alongside the broader Wall system.

Significance

Historical significance

Like other milecastles along this stretch, it functioned as a controlled access point and patrol base regulating movement across the frontier, supplementing the nearby auxiliary fort at Condercum (Benwell) to the east. It is not particularly distinguished among the milecastles, but forms part of the regular fortification rhythm that defines the Wall as a system.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

The site has been largely obscured by modern suburban development along the A69 corridor, and no substantial modern excavation of the milecastle interior is published; its position is known primarily from the projected milecastle spacing and from observation of the Wall course in this sector, including watching briefs during road and housing works. Specific finds attributable to Milecastle 8 itself are sparse in the published record.
