Overview

History & context

Milecastle 9 was a small fortlet on Hadrian's Wall, situated between Turret 8b and Turret 9a in the sector west of Newcastle (Pons Aelius), in the eastern stone-built portion of the Wall. Like other milecastles, it was constructed in the 120s AD under Hadrian and would have been garrisoned by a detachment of auxiliary infantry, likely numbering between 8 and 32 men, controlling a gated north–south passage through the Wall. The site remained in use, with periods of repair and modification, into the late Roman period, though specific occupation phases here are poorly documented.

Significance

Historical significance

Its main role was to monitor and regulate movement across the frontier at this point, combining policing, customs, and signalling functions in conjunction with the flanking turrets. It is not distinguished from other eastern-sector milecastles by any unusual feature in the surviving record.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

The milecastle has effectively been destroyed by later development along the line of the Military Road (B6318) and surrounding land use west of Newcastle, and no upstanding remains survive; its position is inferred from spacing along the Wall rather than from excavation. No significant published excavation has been undertaken at Milecastle 9, and finds from the site are correspondingly sparse.
