Overview

History & context

Turret 8A (West Denton) was a small stone watch tower on Hadrian's Wall, constructed in the 120s AD as part of the original Hadrianic build, situated between Milecastle 8 (West Denton) and Milecastle 9 (Chapel House). Like other Wall turrets, it would have been a roughly 4–5 m square stone tower built integrally with the curtain Wall, manned by a small detachment from a nearby auxiliary garrison and serving as an observation and signalling post. It likely had two storeys, a ground-floor entrance from the south, and was occupied through the 2nd century before the general abandonment of turrets in this sector by the later 2nd or early 3rd century.

Significance

Historical significance

The turret formed part of the regularly spaced surveillance system (two turrets between each milecastle) covering the western approaches to the Newcastle/Pons Aelius crossing of the Tyne, contributing to the close visual control of movement along and across the frontier. It is not individually notable but is part of the wider Hadrianic frontier scheme now inscribed as a World Heritage Site.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

This turret has not been substantially excavated and its exact site, on the western fringe of Newcastle, lies under modern suburban development along the A69 corridor; it is known principally from the predictable spacing of Wall turrets rather than from confirmed structural remains. No significant finds assemblage is recorded in published sources for this specific turret.
