Overview

History & context

Turret 8B, known as Union Hall, was one of the small stone observation towers built at roughly third-of-a-mile intervals along Hadrian's Wall, constructed in the AD 120s under Hadrian and occupied (with interruptions) into the later 2nd or early 3rd century. It stood between Milecastles 8 and 9 in the eastern, urban sector of the Wall west of Newcastle (Pons Aelius), and would have been a standard recessed turret measuring roughly 4–4.5 m square internally, with walls bonded into the curtain and likely manned by a small detachment from the garrison of a nearby fort, probably Benwell (Condercum).

Significance

Historical significance

As part of the integrated Wall system, the turret functioned in surveillance and signalling between milecastles rather than as an independent defensive post, contributing to the continuous observation of the frontier zone. It has no particular distinction in the literature beyond its place in the sequence of eastern turrets.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

The site lies under modern Newcastle/Walbottle development and has not been the subject of significant published excavation; its position is largely inferred from the standard Wall spacing rather than from visible remains. No substantive finds assemblage from this turret is on record.
