Overview

History & context

Moss Side 1 and 2 are two adjacent Roman temporary marching camps located near Brampton in Cumbria, in the hinterland of Hadrian's Wall just south of the Stanegate frontier. As temporary camps, they were short-term earthwork enclosures designed to house troops on the move, on campaign, or undergoing training, most likely dating to the 1st–2nd century AD period of Flavian advance and subsequent frontier consolidation in northern Britain.

Significance

Historical significance

Their location in the Irthing valley, close to the major fort at Birdoswald and the Stanegate/Hadrian's Wall corridor, situates them within the dense military landscape supporting the conquest and garrisoning of the northern frontier. Pairs and clusters of camps in this region typically reflect repeated use of favourable stopping points along established military routes.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

The camps are known principally from aerial photography and cropmark/earthwork survey, which have recorded their playing-card outlines and ditch circuits; no substantial published excavation has clarified their internal arrangements or precise dating, so any chronological attribution remains based on morphology and regional analogy rather than stratified evidence.
