Overview

History & context

Turret 16B was one of the standard recessed stone watch towers built into the curtain of Hadrian's Wall, positioned between Milecastles 16 (Walbottle Dene) and 17 (Welton) in the central-eastern sector west of Newcastle. Like its paired turret 16A, it was constructed in the 120s AD as part of the original Hadrianic scheme and would have functioned as an observation and signalling post manned by a small detachment drawn from the nearby fort garrisons, likely those at Rudchester or Benwell.

Significance

Historical significance

The turret formed part of the integrated surveillance system of the Wall, providing intervisibility along this relatively low-lying stretch between the Tyne valley forts and complementing the patrol regime of the Vallum and Military Way. It has no particular distinction in the historical record beyond its place in the regular Wall sequence.

Archaeology

Archaeological record

Very little is recorded for Turret 16B specifically; its position falls in an area heavily affected by post-medieval agriculture and the expansion of the Newcastle conurbation, and unlike the better-preserved central sector turrets (e.g. 26B Brunton, 29B Black Carts, 7B Denton) it has not been the subject of published modern excavation. Its existence is inferred primarily from the regular spacing of the Wall's turret system rather than from substantial visible remains.
