The Battle

History & Significance

The Regent Morton — James Douglas, Earl of Morton — was one of the toughest and most effective of the regents who governed Scotland in James VI's minority. He systematically suppressed the Marian party across Lowland Scotland. Ayrshire and the Hamilton heartland in Lanarkshire remained centres of resistance. Morton's operations in the west in the mid-1570s broke the last organised Marian military capacity in Scotland.
