History & Significance

When Mary I sent the elderly Duke of Norfolk with royal forces (including London trained band White Coats) to stop Wyatt at Rochester, the troops largely mutinied and went over to the rebels. Norfolk fled back to London in confusion. Wyatt seized Rochester Bridge and the Medway crossing. This mass defection was the most alarming moment of the rebellion — it suggested the government could not rely on its own soldiers. Mary's famous speech at the Guildhall (refusing to flee London) was her response to this crisis.
