History & Significance

Coventry was a firmly Parliamentary city from the outset of the Civil War. Charles I attempted to enter Coventry in August 1642 and was famously refused entry by the Parliamentary garrison. The city served as a major Parliamentary base in the west Midlands throughout the war and its fortifications were strengthened throughout the conflict.
