The Battle

History & Significance

As starvation tightened its grip on besieged Colchester in July-August 1648, the Royalist cavalry inside attempted a breakout through the Parliamentary lines. The cavalry sortie punched through the outer Parliamentary perimeter before being driven back by Parliamentary horse. The failure ended any hope of escape and forced the garrison toward final surrender.
