The Battle

History & Significance

Sandown Castle in Kent, the northernmost of the three Downs forts, completed the chain of artillery strongholds designed to deny the Goodwin Sands anchorage to a Franco-Imperial invasion fleet. Its completion in 1539 marked the end of the first phase of Henry VIII Device Fort programme on the Kent coast.
