History & Significance

After the fall of the Catuvellauni heartland, Caratacus transformed himself into a general of pan-British resistance among the Silures of south Wales. Tacitus describes their dark complexion and fierce spirit. For three years Caratacus conducted guerrilla operations using Silurian mountain terrain, systematically avoiding the pitched battle the Romans required. Even after his eventual capture, Silurian resistance intensified rather than collapsed.
