History & Significance

Hadden Rig was a significant Scottish victory in the deteriorating relations between Henry VIII and James V that led to the Solway Moss campaign. The English had raided across the border and were caught on their return by a Scottish force. The capture of 600 men including Sir Robert Bowes was a serious blow to English prestige. Henry VIII responded by ordering a large-scale invasion that culminated in the disaster at Solway Moss.
