The Battle

History & Significance

Thorfinn the Mighty fought Norwegian royal attempts to assert overlordship over Orkney at Skitten in Caithness. Norway periodically sent forces to reassert nominal sovereignty over the Orcadian earls who had grown too independent. Thorfinn's victory consolidated his independent authority over Orkney and Caithness — the territory that straddled Scotland and Norway and would remain in Norse hands until 1472.
