History & Significance

As the Covenanting rebel force of the Pentland Rising marched eastward from Lanark toward Edinburgh in November 1666, several minor skirmishes occurred with government cavalry patrols. General Tam Dalzell was tracking the rebels with professional dragoons. The rebels attempted to evade interception and reach the capital but were eventually brought to bay at Rullion Green in the Pentland Hills.
