History & Significance

After David IIs capture at Nevilles Cross in 1346, Scotland was governed by Guardians for eleven years while David remained Edward IIIs prisoner in London. Scottish forces continued to resist English pressure during this period — including repulsing Edward Balliols final attempt to reassert his claims. The Guardians negotiated with both France and England while maintaining military capability. Scotland was never reduced to submission during the captivity, and David II was eventually ransomed in 1357 by the Treaty of Berwick.
