Charles I was brought to Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight in November 1647 after his escape from Hampton Court, initially expecting sympathy from Governor Hammond who proved a loyal Parliament man. Charles attempted to escape from Carisbrooke twice but was caught; his imprisonment there and his secret treaty with the Scottish Engagers precipitated the Second Civil War of 1648.
