The Battle

History & Significance

In October 1542 James V assembled a large Scottish army on Fala Muir near Edinburgh to invade England in retaliation for English raids. The Scottish nobility collectively refused to cross the Border, citing an old agreement not to invade England in winter. James V was humiliated by his own army standing down without a fight. The episode revealed how completely he had lost the confidence of the nobility through his reliance on low-born favourites. Solway Moss followed two months later.
