The Battle

History & Significance

At Falkirk on 22 July 1298 the English right wing under Henry de Lacy, Earl of Lincoln, swept around the Scottish left flank after the Scottish cavalry fled. Lincoln's cavalry drove off the covering horsemen and allowed English archers to concentrate their fire on the exposed Scottish schiltrons. The right-wing envelopment was decisive in breaking the tactical stalemate that developed when English cavalry proved unable to break the spear formations frontally.
