Scottish occupation of Newcastle cut London's coal supply. 'The Scots occupy Newcastle and we have no coal' was a real political crisis. The Scots used this leverage to extract the Treaty of Ripon, forcing Charles to pay the Scots army which in turn kept Parliament in session
