History & Significance

The Great Heathen Army overwintered at Repton, the Mercian royal mausoleum, in 873-874. The deliberate choice of Repton was a powerful symbolic act of dominance over the Mercian kingdom. Archaeological excavation has revealed a Danish camp built around the church along with a mass burial of warriors. Burgred fled from Repton.
