History & Significance

Sir William Waller captured Winchester for Parliament in December 1642 in rapid succession after Chichester. The cathedral close had been fortified by the Royalists. Waller's swift southern campaign in late 1642 gave Parliament control of Hampshire's key towns, establishing the infrastructure for subsequent operations including Cheriton.
