History & Significance

During the civil war of Mary's reign, fighting occurred in and around Edinburgh between Marian supporters and the Regent's forces. The Regent Lennox — grandfather of James VI and father of the murdered Darnley — was killed in a raid on Stirling in September 1571. These Edinburgh-area skirmishes show the civil war's intensity in the immediate vicinity of the capital.
