The Battle

History & Significance

Leicester, one of the Five Boroughs of the Danelaw, submitted to Aethelflaed in 918 through negotiation rather than assault following the fall of Derby. The Mercian Chronicle records that most of the Danes who were in Leicester submitted to her. The peaceful submission reflected both Aethelflaed's military reputation after Derby and the willingness of some Danish settlers to accept English overlordship in exchange for security of their lands.
