History & Significance

James VI escaped from Ruthven captivity in June 1583 by riding to St Andrews and then Stirling where the castle garrison declared for him. The king's escape triggered the collapse of the Ruthven regime. Gowrie was arrested and eventually executed. James VI was now determined to exercise real power and began building up a new faction around the young Duke of Lennox and other favourites. The Stirling escape marked the beginning of James VI's personal rule.
