History & Significance

The English victory at Pinkie was in part due to the contribution of English warships in the Firth of Forth. The fleet flanked the Scottish army and subjected it to gunfire while Hertford attacked from the land. The combination of land and sea power — one of the first examples of coordinated joint operations in British history — made the Scottish position untenable.

Forces Involved

English fleet c.30–50 ships supporting Pinkie operations.
