The Battle

History & Significance

Following the Edinburgh prayer book riots of July 1637 and the growing Scottish Covenanting movement, English border towns and garrisons from Berwick south to Newcastle were placed on heightened alert. The governors of Berwick-upon-Tweed reinforced their garrison and prepared defensive works anticipating possible Scottish incursion. The border alert of 1637-1639 marked the beginning of the crisis that would become the Bishops Wars.
