Craigmillar Castle is a medieval fortress situated on elevated ground near Edinburgh in Midlothian. The castle was founded in the late fourteenth century by the Preston family and developed substantially during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, with the addition of substantial curtain walls and domestic ranges that reflect its evolution from a simple tower to a more complex military and residential stronghold. The site is characterised by a well-preserved central keep surrounded by defensive walls, demonstrating the architectural development of Scottish baronial fortifications across several centuries.
