History & Significance

The Glencairn Rising of 1653-54 was the last organised Scottish military resistance to Cromwellian occupation. After its suppression, the English garrisons maintained order through a series of smaller operations against armed bands who refused to disband. The Hamilton and Lanarkshire area — close to the Covenanting heartland — saw periodic confrontations as English cavalry patrols encountered armed Scots. General Monck pacified Scotland through a combination of military force and astute politics.
