The Battle

History & Significance

Marching to relieve Camulodunum, the vexillation of the Ninth Legion — perhaps 2,000 infantry — was ambushed and destroyed en route through the forests of East Anglia. Governor Cerialis escaped with his cavalry but lost all foot soldiers. The ambush demonstrated that Rome's grip on the province was momentarily broken and forced a military reassessment.
