The Battle

History & Significance

Shortly after taking the throne from Donald Ban, Edgar mac Malcolm launched a naval expedition to assert authority over the Hebrides. The campaign was brief and ultimately futile -- within a year Magnus Barelegs of Norway arrived with a massive fleet and Edgar was forced to cede all the islands to Norway by treaty. The episode demonstrates Scottish interest in the Western Isles long before the Treaty of Perth finally settled the question in 1266.
