History & Significance

Gwenwynwyn of Powys led a huge Welsh army against Painscastle in the Marches. A relieving English force caught the besiegers by surprise and annihilated the Welsh army. Gwenwynwyn lost perhaps 3,000 men. The defeat ended his attempt to lead a united Welsh resistance and severely weakened Powys.
