History & Significance

When Bigod attempted his renewed rising in January 1537, he sought to exploit continued discontent in Richmondshire and Wensleydale by encouraging a second muster at Middleham and in the surrounding dales. The response was limited compared to the October 1536 rising, demonstrating that the royal pardon had cooled northern ardour and that Bigod lacked Askes moral authority. The Middleham area second muster quickly dissolved under royal pressure.
