History & Significance

The Normans under Roger of Montgomery (Earl of Shrewsbury) pushed into eastern Powys in the 1090s, establishing Montgomery Castle as their advanced base. The Welsh of Powys fought repeated skirmishes to resist this penetration. Montgomery — originally Hen Domen — became the key Norman position in mid-Wales and the scene of repeated battles from Norman times through the Civil War.
