The reinforcement of Berwick in 1566 with Irish-experienced veterans was a direct response to the Shane O Neill threat. Veterans of the Irish campaigns brought knowledge of guerrilla warfare to the border garrison but also brought destabilising influence on the borders. The episode showed how Irish-based conflicts directly affected English border security policy in the reign of Elizabeth I.
