History & Significance

Penda attacked Northumbria at a place called Iudeu (perhaps Stirling or another northern site) and demanded Oswiu hand over treasure. Oswiu distributed the treasure to buy Penda off. The attack shows the range of Penda military activity stretching into territory far north of Mercia. Bede records the great treasure Oswiu offered was dispersed among the Britons and Angles.
