History & Significance

Duncan II, having dismissed his Norman and English bodyguard under Scottish pressure, was left vulnerable. He was ambushed and killed at Mondynes in the Mearns by Mael Petair, probably acting as Donald Ban's agent. The Annals of Ulster give the location as Mondynes. Duncan was the last Scottish king to die in Scotland in this period of succession conflict. His murder restored Donald Ban for a further three years until Edgar ousted him in 1097.
