History & Significance

The Essex militia muster in 1588 was distinct from but complementary to the Tilbury camp — the county forces guarded the Essex coast from Harwich south to the Thames while Leicester field army at Tilbury covered the direct approach to London. Essex had been identified in Elizabethan defence planning as one of the most vulnerable counties for an enemy landing approaching London from the east.
