History & Significance

In the last year of his reign, Edward the Elder had to suppress a rebellion among Mercians and Welshmen at Chester. He moved to Farndon on Dee and received submissions, but died at Farndon in July 924. His death came before the full fruits of his reconquest were consolidated. His son Aethelstan had to fight to secure the throne before completing the unification of England.
