The Battle

History & Significance

One of the most remarkable Scottish victories of the Wars of Independence and one of the least remembered. Three separate divisions of the English army — under Segrave, Neville, and Ralph Manton — were each caught and defeated in succession over a single morning near Roslin. The English were surprised each time as they came forward. Several English commanders were captured. The victory demonstrated that English conquest of Scotland was far from complete — though Edward Is great campaign of 1303-04 would soon reverse the situation.
