History & Significance

Agricola deployed the Classis Britannica (British fleet) to operate in concert with his land advance, raiding coastal settlements and gathering intelligence. The fleet circumnavigated Britain — the first recorded circumnavigation — and the Orkney Islands (Orcades) were apparently visited and submitted to Rome. Tacitus says Thule was seen but not approached. This naval element was as important strategically as the land battles, supplying the army and striking where the enemy did not expect.
